Active Child Travel to Primary School
Details
Considering the Cairene context and its urban extensions, this study hypothesizes that planned urban districts are becoming less suitable for children to walk to school. Three private primary mixed-sex schools; one in each of Dokki, Madinet Nasr and the 6th of October districts participated. A parents' questionnaire, and an urban survey were the methods of the study in each of the schools. Results showed that active school travel is much less practiced in new cities than in the inner city districts with percentages 35.3% in Dokki, 40.9% in Madinet Nasr and 12.5% in October. Factors affecting this physical activity were unveiled in the three districts, suggesting some policies and interventions for pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods.
