It is found from Michigan and New York to Florida and west to Texas. The wingspan is 15-18 mm. They have light grey forewings with a dark grey band and a dark grey hourglass-shaped marking. The hindwings are brownish-grey with a pale fringe. Adults are on wing from April to July. The larvae feed on Nyssa species. A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order; there are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth (about ten times the number of species of butterfly), with thousands of species yet to be described.
