Adapting Darkness
Details
In "Adapting Darkness" Joseph Conrad's groundbreaking novella 'Heart of Darkness' is analysed from a formalistic point of view and compared with its 1994 film adaptation directed by Nicolas Roeg. It discusses how the modern commercial American film adapts a complex Modernist narrative as that of Joseph Conrad. The narrative structures of Modernist fiction and modern American film are very different. Indeed, the way of narrating stories in modern Hollywood cinema is moulded after the Victorian novel, which the Modernists were revolting against, something that complicates the adaptation of 'Heart of Darkness'.
