African religion and planetary ethics
Details
Islam and Christianity are in the majority in Africa, but they cohabit with the ancestral religion considered archaic in the eyes of African intellectuals. Why do Africans reject the religion practiced by their ancestors? Is it because ancestral practices cannot fit into the framework of religions? In other words, are these beliefs really religions? Through the religion of the Mossi in Burkina Faso, the author explains the interweaving of customs and ancestral religions and demonstrates that in many respects, African religion has common characteristics (including animism) with the great religions of the world (Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam). Consequently, African religion deserves its place in the cartography of world religions. Indeed, it conveys values that can contribute to the respect of the great principles of humanity in the framework of the planetary ethics initiative. Africans should therefore take an interest in them because they constitute the foundation of their identity alongside the other peoples of the world.
