Details

The economic base of the tribal society in Assam has been, by and large, subsistence agriculture. Penetration of market forces and exposure to modern way of life has changed their consumption baskets leading to increased demand for cash. This inter alia other factors might have induced tribal farmers to produce for market. However, to make a successful transition typically the tribal farmers are handicapped for lack of skill, relative remoteness of location and inability to invest. Unlike that of shifting cultivation in the hills, the problems of the plain tribal farmers have received very little attention in the academic literature. This book attempts to fill this void to some extent. In this book, various indicators of agricultural transition like level of adoption of HYV seeds, cropping intensity, use of fertilizer, farm mechanization, crop diversification, etc. have been analyzed in detail. Also, factors influencing innovation and adoption of the modern farming techniques have been investigated by use of regression and logit analyses. I hope this book will be of great help for the students as well as the research scholars in the field of agricultural economics.
