Alcohol and women

Epidemiological studies have shown an increase in alcohol consumption and alcohol dependence among women, something that until then was mostly considered a male problem in Brazil. It seems that the process of female emancipation has brought to the social scene a character who remained invisible for a long time: the alcoholic woman. This book, based on socio-anthropological literature on the health-disease process (chapters 5 to 8) and from a gender perspective (chapters 9 to 11), investigates alcohol dependence among women. Its ultimate aim will be to understand the meanings and significance of female alcohol dependence among men and women in the process of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Sociologist graduated from the University of Sao Paulo, specialist in Socio-Psychology from the Fundação Escola de Sociologia e Política and Master of Science from the Preventive Medicine Programme of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sao Paulo. She is currently working on new studies in the area of Human and Social Sciences in Health.
