Alcohol-Use at the Workplace: The Case of Police Divisions in Accra
Details
Whiles alcoholic beverages have become popular and contributed immensely to global economic growth, it has at the same time led to the loss of Billions of Dollars to corporate organizations, and functional impairments and cardiovascular disease for harmful drinkers. Recent reports indicating the dangers associated with alcohol use raised the question 'if all formally employed individuals working in corporate organizations should be banned from drinking alcohol; and if Assistance Programs should form one of the compulsory preconditions for setting up agencies'? Although the Ghana Police Service has banned the use of psychoactive substance among security forces, this research has uncovered the prevalence of problematic drinking of alcohol among police officers, raising numerous concerns and questions, like: Is the Ghana Police service aware of the prevalence of alcohol use among its employees? Have there been studies in the workforce to ascertain the causes and effects of drinking on the health and wellbeing of the officer who drink? and, What intervention programmes are there to help officers who drink? Read how this concerns were addressed by Herman NK Agboh (M.Phil) in this paper.
