Sometimes, the social and political involvement of rock musicians goes beyond simple songwriting and protest but instead takes the form of a spectacular concert, recording or televised event, for the purpose of fundraising and raising public awareness in various social and global issues. Strange enough, somewhat lost in these performances is the sense of rebellion, opposition, subversive attitude, or radical politics that have been associated with rock music since its inception. This book examines key charity events in rock music history by employing historical analysis and helps understand altruism in rock music as an important social and cultural trend over the years.

Dr. Ji Hoon Lee received his Ph.D. in mass communication at University of Florida in 2010 with his dissertation, "Heeding the Call: An Historical Overview of Philanthropy in Rock." Although his research interests range from rhetorics to print journalism, he specializes in popular culture, including music, film, television, and sports.
