AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CARP PRODUCTION IN MEGHALAYA
Details
The study concludes that carp farming in Meghalaya, particularly in West Garo Hills, is economically viable and can play a critical role in reducing the state's dependence on imported fish. However, widespread inefficiencies in input use, combined with structural constraints such as seed and feed shortages and inadequate market access, limit the sector's performance. While profitability is evident, efficiency gains and institutional support are essential for scaling production.Sustained government involvement, complemented by farmer cooperatives and private sector participation, will be pivotal in realizing the state's fish production potential. By addressing identified challenges, Meghalaya can move toward self-sufficiency in fish production, enhance rural livelihoods, and contribute to broader goals of food and nutritional security.
