Improvement of the Reading and Writing Skill of the
students is very important in the Middle East
Technical University (METU), where the medium of
instruction is English. That is why after each course
renewal project, there arises the need to evaluate
the latest version. This work ,therefore, attempts
to evaluate the effectiveness of the ENG 101,the
Development of Reading and Writing Skills 1 course
offered by the Department of Modern Languages at
METU. In literature, there were very few
comprehensive studies considering a course
both in general sense and with a more specific focus
on a certain element such as the coursebook. Thus,
this particular study aimed to contribute to the
existing evaluation procedures by providing a double
perspective; one being in course (general) level and
the other one in materials level with a specific
focus on the coursebook. It was hoped that the
results of this would positively contribute to the
curriculum development processes. Besides, the
methods and the instruments used in the study would
inspire the ones who would like to evaluate any
course and its coursebook regarding the degree of
effectiveness.
