The townspeople rescue the man, who turns out to be a doctor, named Galen P. Gray.The townspeople get excited about the new healer, and the doctor is befriended by many members of the town after diagnosing them of a variety of diseases, while displaying a curious aversion to blood. As he grows close to the town, Gray falls in love with Rebekah Muldoon, June's mother who has been pregnant and wants Gray to give her an abortion, which he refuses to do.
