Ancient Divers: in antiquity the underwater world may not have been as accessible as it is today but ancient cultures still harvested its goods, constructed in its realm, reclaimed sunken valuables and used it to aid in military campaigns. Some of these goals were accomplished through the use of remotely operated underwater tools, but for the most part the accomplishments of these tasks was left to Ancient Divers. Diving today is extremely easy when compared to diving in antiquity. There was no SCUBA gear in ancient times so all diving was free diving, with the exception of some references to leather breathing bladders which would not be able to contain much air, meaning that a diver usually had only one breath to do what he/she needed to do before coming back to the surface for more air (Desislava, Nihrizov & Zhekov 1999). Even though they lacked the technology available today they did face the same problems, such as the bends and blacking out during a breath hold.
