Annang Dances: A Contemporary Compositional Approach

Gomposition in music, which is simply the 'putting together' of musical notes is approached from different angles ranging from one culture to another and from the perspective of the composer. In recent art compositions, there is a craving for and the interest to draw compositional materials from traditional musical elements for creation of new music. This work, 'Annang Dances' stems from this interest. It draws motifs, themes,and other compositional materials from Annang traditional music for an original composition of slow and fast dances. These compositional materials are used aa a stepping stone and also as a point of departure for this original composition for contemplation and which can de danced to; and to create an identity - African identity in general and that of Annang traditional music in particular. It is an instrumental music to be performed on the piano. This work is multidimensional in approach, laying credence on musicology, music compoposition, anthropology and history. It will be a great source of information and resources for students, musicologists and other researchers interested in piano music, African Traditional and Art Music.
