This is the first study to examine the work of foundations in the promotion of democracy, particularly efforts to encourage political participation among individuals and groups. In addition to providing a detailed theoretical introduction to democracy and foundations, the author analyzes four types of foundations along with their specific mechanisms and approaches, including those specifically geared toward low-participation groups.
