Anxiety, depression and heart surgery

Anxiety is a normal human emotion, common when faced with difficult decisions and everyday obstacles. However, excessive anxiety can become a disease, or rather an anxiety disorder. Depression is a mental disorder characterized by a series of symptoms capable of negatively interfering with an individual's life. Cardiac surgery is a high-risk invasive procedure involving complex factors such as cardiac manipulation and cardiopulmonary bypass, which are often accompanied by physical and psychological complications. The study of the relationship between symptoms of anxiety and depression and the pre- and post-operative period of heart surgery is fundamental so that we can provide adequate support to patients who will undergo this type of procedure.
