Details

This edited work is a constructive collaboration between experts and authorities worldwide on the biology, function, and translational medicine of the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) polymorphisms and protein isoforms. It encompasses various aspects of innate and acquired immunology, and gastrointestinal and neurological functions, and presents the latest literature on the basic mechanisms, signaling pathways, gene editing, and novel approaches to intervention and preventive measures against disease states throughout the lifespan.

In addition, this book provides an insightful discussion on the role of APOE4 in human evolution and its potential contribution to antagonistic pleiotropy, malnutrition, fertility, and enteric infections. It offers concise topics ranging from the biochemistry and biological functions of apoE to the potential pharmacological and molecular medicine strategies for disease remediation, particularly for neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. This book is a constructive effort to advance our understanding of APOE4 and its effects on homeostasis and disease in various body systems.

Reinaldo Oriá is a distinguished professor in the field of Pharmacology and Infectious Diseases, with a strong focus on tissue healing mechanisms and neuroscience research. Since 2005, Oriá has served as a dedicated professor in the Department of Morphology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), where he imparts his knowledge to students through teaching Human Histology and Embryology. He's been instrumental in advancing research through his involvement in the Image Processing Nucleus (NEMPI) and his role as the founder and coordinator of the Tissue Healing Biology Laboratory (LABICONTE) at the UFC Biomedicine Center.

John Wesson Ashford is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist. Ashford's studies include Alzheimer's disease and its effects on human memory. Ashford is Chair of the Memory Screening Advisory Board of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, and a senior editor of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. He also serves as a Director of the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center in the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, as well as the clinical professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (affiliated) at Stanford University.

Carr J Smith is part of the Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics in Pacific Palisades, CA. From 1984-1986, He was an Instructor of Pathology at the University of South Alabama. His other academic appointments include serving as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Physiology & Pharmacology at Wake Forest University College of Medicine, Visiting Scientist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Pathology, and faculty member at the Florida State University Department of Nurse Anesthesia. For the last several years, his primary research interest has been the normal function of the apolipoprotein e4 allele.
