Asperger Syndrome

The last two decades have seen a dramatic rise in the number of children being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, especially high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome. It has become increasingly common for students with Asperger's to be educated with their typical peers in the general education environment. Unfortunately, many general education teachers lack awareness and training on the nuances of the disorder and its educational impact. This book describes the development of an in-service for general education elementary school teachers. It reviews research on the disorder and offers recommendations for intervention and strategies to support students on the spectrum in the general education classroom. This book should be especially useful for education professionals, such as speech and language specialists and school psychologists, who are looking to educate teachers or for anyone is interested in learning about effective strategies and interventions to promote the success of these students in a typical school environment.
