At Home in Maine

"At Home in Maine" tells the story of how one woman's transformative homebirth experience led to the "birth" of a one-of-a-kind web-based documentary film series about homebirth and midwifery care (also entitled "At Home in Maine"). Filmmaker, educator and activist Nicolle Littrell takes the reader "outside the frame," describing how her pregnancy and homebirth experience led to an emerging political consciousness about the state of birth in the US--from which the film project was "born." In this engaging narrative, Littrell explores not only the personal and political dimensions of homebirth and midwives but the role of filmmaking in regards to helping to make these reproductive health choices more visible and accessible to women--and "normalizing" these choices in the public eye. Filtered through a feminist lens, Littrell examines the socio-political vagaries of "vaginal politics," as well as the significance of the relationship between natural birth, the Internet and social change.

Nicolle Littrell is a filmmaker, educator, activist and mother. After a transformative homebirth with her son in 2004, she began producing documentary and social change films about birth options, including homebirth and midwifery care. Nicolle is also adjunct faculty in the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies program at the University of Maine.
