Ateso Linguistics Studies
Details
One way in which we can investigate the dynamism of language is by identifying words borrowed into the language from other foreign languages. This book investigates the phonological adaptation of loanwords in Ateso when they are borrowed from English and Kiswahili languages. The book is based on research findings that postulate, that, when loanwords enter a recipient language, in this case Ateso, they are made to conform to the recipient language phonological system by going through some phonological and morphological processes. This book methodically describes the phoneme inventories of the three languages above, and then goes on to discuss phonological and phonotactic possibilities of each of the languages in discussing the borrowing phenomenon. The findings of this book will hopefully break new ground on studies in loanword phonology.
