Atlantic Ports and the First Globalisation c. 1850-1930

Port cities were the means through which cultural and economic exchange took place between continental societies and the maritime world. In examining the ports of Brazil, the Caribbean and West Africa, this volume will provide fresh insight into the meaning of the 'First Globalisation'.

Contributors to this volume offer interesting angles from which to understand the land-based effects of maritime history and economic globalisation. highlights the centrality of transportation and technological advances in the harnessing of the natural world and the development of a system of global capital. The collection is also useful to identify avenues for further research into social and cultural studies of the 'Port Communities' identified in many of the chapters and to highlight an overlooked area in Atlantic History.
