AU law
Details
The AU is an organisation dedicated to the promotion of peace, security and development in Africa, with democracy, elections and governance at the top of its agenda. This organisation has adopted a series of legal instruments with a view to strengthening democracy and governance in Africa. However, unconstitutional changes of government have become major challenges for democracy in Africa. Notwithstanding the existence of all these standards, coups d'état, electoral manipulation and restrictions on freedom of expression are all obstacles leading to political crises, which in turn lead to regional instability. In this respect, the AU must therefore promote a culture of democracy and the rule of law in Africa, in order to strengthen independent democratic institutions. Of course, the challenges of democracy in Africa are complex and multifaceted, a holistic approach is necessary and will enable the AU to play an important role in promoting a more democratic, stable and prosperous Africa, something that has never been done until now.
