Coldplay are an English alternative rock band formed in London by Chris Martin (lead vocals, guitars, piano), Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass) and Will Champion (drums, percussion). They have released four studio albums Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005) and Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008) which have sold over 50 million copies. The band has released over twenty singles, including: "Yellow", which was the band's first hit in the United States where it reached number six on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart; "Speed of Sound", which reached number two on the UK Singles Chart; and "Viva la Vida" which was the band's first number-one single in the UK and the US. Coldplay has received 43 awards from 117 nominations. They received six awards from fourteen nominations from the Brit Awards winning Best British Group three times. They have won seven Grammy Awards from twenty nominations. 2009 was their most successful year having received seven nominations at the 51st Grammy Awards more than they had done previously of which they won three.
