Cataract remains as a major causes of blindness (80%) in the Chittagong districts of Bangladesh. The uptake of cataract surgery is very much low at rural community as well as among the female patients. This work helps us to identify the major barriers to the uptake of cataract surgery by using a qualitative approach. Purpose of the study: Purpose: This study aimed at identifying the barriers to the uptake of cataract surgery and to understand the people s knowledge, attitude, belief and practice toward cataract surgery at community level in Chittagong District of Bangladesh. Qualitative research methods were used. These included:In-depth interview of cataract patients (those who refused operation) and individuals with cataract (previously undiagnosed villagers with cataract). Focus group discussion with Village Eye Care Workers, elderly male and female villagers without cataract, key informants and family members. A researcher s diary. FINDINGS: The main reasons identified for poor utilization of cataract services were as follows: Fear,Costs,Social beliefs and attitudes,Inadequate eye care services,Lack of awareness,Escort
