Basic Techniques in Parasitology
Details
Helminth parasitic infections are common problems in developing countries. People residing in these countries don't have access to medicines or cannot afford to pay for them. They resort to using traditional medicines. With the limited repository of anthelmintic drugs & increasing resistance in the drugs, particularly in animals, it is the need of the hour to look for alternatives to treat such infestations. The study of traditionally used medicines to treat various ailments is known as Ethnopharmacology. Traditionally used medicines continue to be sold in markets & residences without proper scientific validation. These claims need to be scientifically authenticated by comparing its efficacy with standard drugs, both in vitro & in vivo. Doses have to be determined, since high dose could be toxic to the patient. The minimum dose at which efficacy is seen is considered to be the safe dose. Not all traditionally used medicines are safe. They could be potentially toxic to the user. Hence studies to evaluate the toxic effects if any of these traditionally used medicines is necessary. The study of potential toxic effects of any extract or drug is known as toxicology.
