Details

The volume deals with the basic aspects of anaesthesia, IC and pain in neonates and children. Topics covered include anatomy and physiology, strategies to be adopted in the treatment of these patients, the use of "off-label" pharmacological agents within paediatric perioperative medicine. Internationally recognised guidelines aimed at standardising the most important procedures, such as the treatment of hypothermia, central venous catheterisation techniques, or prevention of catheter-induced infections are also discussed. The last part of the volume is more focused on clinical and technical aspects of anaesthesia induction and monitoring. The volume will be a useful update for neonatologists, pediatricians, anesthesiologists in their clinical practice, and an educational tool for residents in these fields. The volume includes contributions from anesthesiologists from The Hospital for Sick Children, which is affiliated with the University of Toronto and is Canada's most research-intensive hospital.

Zusammenfassung

From the reviews:

"This book is the product of a master class in anesthesia, critical care, and pain management in neonates and children held in Italy in collaboration with McGill University of Montreal. ... The book is written for physician practitioners in intensive care pediatrics and anesthesia. It may be appropriate for anesthetists, students, and residents who are studying in this field, but probably too advanced for nurses and other adjunct healthcare providers." (Jay P. Goldsmith, Doody's Review Service, February, 2009)

"It is helpful to have a compact, reader-friendly guide such as Basics ... for tips on technical aspects of regional anesthesia procedures as well as general advice on interacting with anxious children and their parents. ... The chapter authors have succinctly summarized essential topics and address many common questions encountered by anyone involved in the perioperative treatment of children. ... a useful and compact compilation of topics for pediatric practitioners at all levels of training in anesthesia, pain management, and critical care." (Tiffany L. Brainerd, Journal of the American Medical Association, March, 2011)
