The 8th edition of The Basics of Librarianship, the well known standard work on the subject, has been completely updated, extensively extended and partly re-designed.

It provides a detailed description of all the fundamental steps involved in acquiring, cataloguing, storing and using library material, with an emphasis on modern developments and new technologies. In line with their significance for modern libraries, it not only deals comprehensively with books and audio-visual materials but also with the various types of electronic publication. An extensive new section on Library Information Sources is devoted not only to the provision of bibliographical information and particular types of catalogue but also to the various sources of information for periodicals and databases, specialist information portals, digital libraries, internet searches, the various types of virtual information and to central issues of information competence and ethics.

Thus the new volume provides an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of all aspects of libraries, librarianship and the provision of library information.
