Coating biologically inert metallic implants with biologically active materials, like hydroxyapatite (HA), combines the mechanical benefits of metals with the biocompatibility of HA. Moreover it is an attempt to accelerate bone formation at initial stages of osseointegration, to improve implant fixation and to prevent the release of metal ions from the implant into the body. This book (PhD dissertation) provides information and presents some studies about producing of nano and submicron sized HA powders, densification behavior of produced HA powders, and bioceramics coating on metal substrates by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. Studies about bioceramics coating presented in this book were conducted towards prevention of crack occurrence, low adhesion strength and HA decomposition which are problems commonly encountered in EPD method. Furthermore, studies were conducted to create coating surfaces consisted of HA, TiO2 and both TCP/TiO2. The information provided and the studies presented in this book are especially useful to professionals in "Coatings and Thin Films" and "Surfaces and Interfaces" fields related to biomaterials, and bioceramics coated metallic implants.

Autorentext

Dr. Onder Albayrak received his PhD in Mech. Eng. from Bogazici Uni. in 2008, working on synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanopowders, and bioceramics coatings on metallic substrates, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sabri Altintas. Dr. Albayrak has been continuing his academic career at the Dept. of Mech. Eng. in Mersin Uni. as a faculty member.
