Bioremediation of industrial effluents

Bioremediation one of the environmental clean up methodologies is well-known for its application in creosote contaminated soil systems. An attempt was made at our end to use this technology for liquid systems, specifically to a combined industrial effluent. It is a complex mixture of effluents discharged into a typical common effluent treatment plant by thirty five different industrial units of an industrial estate at Hyderabad. Broadly, the biosorption studies included reduction/removal of metals and biodegradation of complex organic compounds present in the combined industrial effluents by white rot fungus. The studies were carried out in shake flask as well as lab scale fluidized bed bioreactor.
