It extends the current BMW Sports Activity Series model lineup which now comprises the BMW X1, BMW X3, BMW X5, and the BMW X6. The X1 is based on the same platform as the AWD BMW 3 Series Touring. The concept version of the X1 was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. On April 1 2010 Nova FM broke the story that the BMW X1 would have exclusive access to Australia's underground road network leading to lucrative gold and lithium mines as an April Day's Fool joke. All sDrive models are rear wheel drive, while xDrive models are all wheel drive. Production began in Europe in the BMW Werk Leipzig plant in October 2009. It will not be sold in the United States until 2011 after production of the second generation X3 begins in South Carolina.
