Border Crossings in Science Fiction
Details
This book proposes to look at contemporary American science fiction novels and films from the perspective of border constructions and dissolutions, that is, it will look at SF stories through the lens of diverse theoretical approaches. Each of the four chapters will attempt to analyze various reconfigurations of intercultural, interracial, intermedial, as well as cross-genre encounters, while looking at specific themes such as the formation of (narrative) identities, the (re)configuraions of the images of the human/alien bodies, as well as the manifestations of otherness in the real or in the digital spaces. The chapters will deal with films such as Avatar, A. I., The Island, The Host, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, etc. as discussed from postcolonial perspectives, and with stories such as Ready Player One, Tron and Tron Legacy in terms of virtual identities and possible reconstructions of human/artificial identities into something called "hybrid terminal identity." Border crossings in terms of genre - horror and science fiction - will be analyzed in Ridley Scott's masterpiece, Prometheus.
