Bowtie models as preventive models in maritime safety
Details
This work has been inspired by the fact that there are still many accidents at the sea with the result of loss of lives and SOLAS ships even though the norms and technologies are each time better, many lessons have been learnt from the past and each generation of seafarers has a formation of higher quality. So I started by making a list of the main causes of accidents which may be resumed in 3 types: human factors, natural hazards and mechanical errors, without forgetting other cases such as piracy or terrorism. Evidently, it is impossible to deepen in each of the three families of causes but several practical cases are presented trying to be didactic and delightful at the same time. Also, people in the maritime world usually do not have an extensive knowledge of statistics. It is also difficult to model the accidents mathematically since each one has different characteristics, angles, and surely there are not two equal. The book concentrates on the Bowtie Model which is not very complex from the statistical point of view and may be useful to represent visually the threats and find solutions, at different levels and branches of the events.
