Broadband penetration in the UK, 2006

Broadband is a fresh technology that has started to develop in a few countries since 2000. It tends to replace the existing type of connections offering higher speed of transferred data, a variety of new broadband services such as Voice and Video over IP, Internet TV and fixed package rental costs. However, the majority of countries all around the world have a long way ahead until satisfactory levels of broadband services to the customers are reached. This paper is an approach towards the broadband sector and its development by using GIS and statistical methods from the customer's view. The paper firstly attempts to concisely describe the broadband market and performance in the UK by displaying acquired data from Point Topic Ltd, with maps and diagrams. Then, two conducted surveys by Point Topic Ltd and Recom in April - May 2005 and in December 2005 - January 2006, have being elaborated with cartographical and statistical methods. The third chapter evaluates and discusses the outcome of the analysis. Taking everything into consideration the paper suggests a way that GIS and statistical methods can be merged in order to be of assistance to a wider research of broadband development.
