Broadcasting for Peace
Details
Radio remains a vital tool for addressing societal challenges, especially in rural communities where literacy and infrastructural barriers limit access to other forms of media. This study delves into the pivotal role of Radio Benue in mitigating the persistent conflict between farmers and herders in Katsina-Ala, Benue State, Nigeria. Anchored on the agenda-setting theory, the research highlights how Radio Benue leverages its wide reach to disseminate security updates, promote dialogue, and foster community engagement. Through surveys of 380 respondents, the findings reveal that the station plays a significant role in raising awareness and driving impactful conversations on conflict resolution. Despite its effectiveness, challenges such as limited funding, editorial constraints, and political interference hinder its potential. The study underscores the need for stronger institutional support and innovative programming to harness radio's full capacity as a peacebuilding tool. This work reaffirms the power of radio in transforming conflict prone communities and fostering harmony through communication.
