Captivating Copies
Details
Captivating Copies offers a timely exploration of remix culture. From the Kopyright Liberation Front to copyright clampdowns to creative bootlegs, Shiga details a pivotal period in development of remix tools, rules and stars. Focusing on the use of digital sampling in DJ culture, Shiga identifies patterns in the responses of musicians, record companies, critics and scholars to the integration of digital copying in musical production. Using industry publications, interviews with remixers and DJs, and sound recordings, Shiga explores the conditions that made remixing at once so controversial and profitable. The story he tells about the rise of sampling artists, DJ stars, and do-it-yourself remixers sheds new light on the control of creativity and copying in contemporary culture.
