Isabella of France took the City of London, the principal city of the Kingdom of England, after King Edward II abandoned the Tower and fled. Isabella had almost completed her campaign.Isabella's army of some 1,500 men had fought its way deep into England already, King Edward remaining in London throughout. As Isabella neared London, with Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, she evaded Edward's army under Despenser. Isabella moved yet closer, and Edward retreated speedily to Gloucester, fearing a heavy defeat. Isabella and Mortimer thus took London without a fight.
