Care needs of young adult refugees

When young refugees turn 18, almost all of their familiar circumstances change. From their place of accommodation to their usual caregivers, everything is different from one day to the next. This presents young women and men with major challenges in coping with everyday life and harbours many dangers. At this juncture, special sensitivity is required in the care and support of young adults in order to meet their needs and prevent them from slipping into social exclusion.

Magdalena Söberl, born on 12 July 1987, social worker in the Vienna asylum scene. For some time now, she has been primarily involved in the interface between facilities for unaccompanied minor refugees and facilities for adult refugees. In this role, she has become particularly aware of the challenges faced by young adults.
