The Boneset Borer (Carmenta pyralidiformis) is a moth of the Sesiidae family. It was described by Walker in 1856. It is known from North America, including Arkansas, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio and Virginia.The wingspan is about 21 mm.The larvae feed on the roots of boneset, a wetland plant found along streams and ditch banks. A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order; there are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth (about ten times the number of species of butterfly), with thousands of species yet to be described.
