The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter the Apostle is the seat of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jackson. The cathedral is named for the apostle Saint Peter. Organized in Jackson in 1846, the first Catholic Church was burned by the city's eternal nemesis, General William Tecumseh Sherman, in 1863. A second structure suffered a similar fate; the current cathedral was begun in 1897 and dedicated three years later. As the seat of the diocese, The Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle is home to Bishop Joseph Latino, the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jackson and serves as general headquarters for Catholics in northern portion of the state.
