This case study seeks to gain an understanding ofthe way private-sector chief executive officers(CEOs) impact a major community developmentinitiative and to determine whether or not theinitiative is positively served by CEO leadership.The case study's context is the Chicago HousingAuthority's Plan for Transformation (The Plan). ThePlan represents the largest reconstruction of publichousing in the nation's history. The study foundthat the CEOs positively impacted the Plan bysharing and leveraging their time, money,intelligence, and social capital and that those CEOshad primarily social motives for participating inthe Plan. Additionally, major stakeholders involvedwith the Plan perceived the CEO's roles asprovidingleadership, assisting in fundraising, settingpolicy, guiding the Plan, and serving as mentors.
