Charles Joseph "Charlie" Crist, Jr. is an American politician who is the 44th and current Governor of Florida. A member of the Republican Party, Crist previously served as Florida State Senator, Education Commissioner, and Attorney General. He was elected governor in 2006 with 52.4% of the vote, and took office the following year. As Florida Attorney General, an office he held from 2002 until his election as governor, Crist was noted for his efforts to expand the authority of the office to prosecute civil rights violations and protect the environment, as well as his involvement in the Terri Schiavo case, where he broke with the stance of governor Jeb Bush. As governor he has taken conservative positions on a broad range of social issues, including support for gun rights and capital punishment and opposition to elective abortion, same-sex marriage and LGBT adoption.
