Le château de Fougères est l'un des plus imposants châteaux forts français, occupant une superficie de deux hectares. Le château a été construit sur un site naturellement protégé, un rocher émergeant d'un marécage cerné par une boucle du Nançon, affluent du Couesnon, faisant office de douves naturelles. Le premier château fort qui appartenait au XIe siècle à la famille d'Amboise a été ruiné en 1166 après avoir été assiégé et pris par Henri II Plantagenêt. Il a été démantelé et son donjon rasé. Raoul II le reconstruisit vers 1173.
