Children s Bill of Rights in Botswana
Details
Social work in Botswana is a young profession. The history of the profession can be traced to 1946 where the first social welfare officer was brought to Botswana by the colonial administration to deal with returning soldiers from 1st world war and youth whose behaviour was wayward. The actual professional teaching of social work started in 1974 at Sebele, Agricultural college and introduced to the University of Botswana in 1986. The profession has grown since then. the first Children's Act was in 1991 and was later reviewed in 1989 and finally enacted in 2009. The 20 years of review was due to the understanding of children from a cultural standpoints as mini adults and could not really have fully flashed rights. this could not hold water for long because of the international treaties and conventions that why there is the new act now. This book was conceptualized after experience of the two authors from their different fields of social work. Mr. Taolo Lucas has been in academia for almost 30 years and has done a lot of research around children. Mr. Jongman has been a practitioner for 6 years before joining academia.
