It is found in eastern North America, from southern New Jersey south to northern Florida, west to Wisconsin and Texas.The wingspan is 17-21 mm. Adults are on wing from June to September. There are two generations per year in most of its range. In Louisiana, there are three annual generations. The larvae feed on lichen.A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order; there are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth (about ten times the number of species of butterfly), with thousands of species yet to be described
