The book deals with issues relating to the civil states of persons and the different legal regimes for each civil state of a person. From embryo to death, a person goes through different civil states, such as embryo, birth, minor, adult, incapacitated adult suffering from physical and mental impairment, marital status and divorce, their status as a civilian whose existence is uncertain, either because they have been absent for a long period of time with no news of them or their whereabouts, or because they have gone missing, particularly in the event of natural disasters; their status as a member of a family, either by kinship or by marriage; and finally, their status as a deceased person. Every person is bound to have one or more of these civil statuses. Personal and family law confers rights and obligations that vary considerably depending on the person's civil status.
