Classical Philology - From Sign to Sound to Meaning

Classical Philology - From Sign to Sound to Meaning is the study of the systems of Ancient Greek text to speech, elaborated by Progetto Leggere. This device can read texts written in ancient Greek overlooking the traditional transliteration of the ancient alphabet in Latin letters. The in-depth knowledge of Classical Philology and Ancient Phonetics has been essential in developing a tool capable of rendering the Greek heritage of the Text Encoding Initiative - the campaign of digitalization of Classical Literature promoted within the new discipline of Humanities Computing - accessible and multimedia. Text to speech is included among the technical aids for the visually-impaired in the Italian National Health Service Nomenclatore Tariffario delle Protesi. Theoretical and speculative knowledge and studies of Philology become here modern and operative competences for the production of a device of higher and finer cultural and social use.

Previously Ancient Greek research fellow for three years at UNIPG, Silvia Gianferrari has collaborated with the UNIBO Course Computer e Antichità Classica, has been a consultant of the EU Rinascimento Virtuale project and coordinated the NTD_MIUR Project Sintesi Vocale del Greco Antico.
