Details

This book provides an overview of cleaner production, including how regulations have evolved, and presents a broad perspective on how it is being developed. Presenting several practical examples and applications of modern clean production technologies, it provides readers with ideas on how to extend these practices to other industry sectors in order to contribute to a better environment in the future.

The authors start from the initial concepts of how to implement new cleaner production systems, before collecting recent developments in the area and demonstrating practical ways in which the latest knowledge can be applied. It motivates readers to develop new ideas on how to improve manufacturing systems to save energy and generate less waste, and discusses strategies on how to save, reuse and adapt materials, as well as techniques to reduce the waste and pollution produced.

This book serves as a reference resource for industrial management engineers and researchers, and is also of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students looking for insights into cleaner production in industry.

Provides a guide to cleaner manufacturing, from the basic concepts to the latest developments being adopted in industry Makes a resume about the Environmental Management Systems and Environmental Regulations Describes in detail some Environmental Management Practices and Cleaner Production Tools Indicates the factors affecting the adoption of Cleaner Production practices Details sustainable production cases in different sectors, such as Agriculture, Energy production, Chemical industry, Building construction, and Automotive industry Explains how the Environmental Performance Assessment can be conducted in various sectors

Francisco J. G. Silva holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Processes, both from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, as well as a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering Industrial Management from the School of Engineering, Polytechnic of Porto. He also has a postgraduate qualification in Materials and Manufacturing Processes from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto. He has been Head of the Graduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic of Porto's School of Engineering since 2014, and was Head of the Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Superior School of Industrial Studies and Management there, from 2003 to 2006. He has published more than 120 papers in respected peer-reviewed journals and presented over 100 papers at international conferences. He is a member of the scientific committees of various international conferences, such as FAIM Flexible Automation andIntelligent Manufacturing. He has been responsible for a number of Special Issues of MDPI journals, including Coatings and Metals. Moreover, he has conducted national and international research projects involving other academic institutions and companies. He has strong links to industry, having founded, owned and managed a company in the electric sector for 18 years.

Ronny Miguel Gouveia holds an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Materials and Production Technologies and B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, both from the School of Engineering, Polytechnic of Porto. He was a guest researcher at Ohio University, working mainly in the fields of milling and additive manufacturing, and was involved in an ongoing project on the development of a simulation software tool for optimizing manufacturing and process planning. Despite being a newcomer to the research field, he has already co-published about 20 papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented several papersand research findings at international conferences, such as FAIM Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing. His research focuses on areas such as additive manufacturing, sustainability and materials, equipment, and process and quality optimization. He also has a passion for the automotive industry, field in which he creates unique designs and solutions for diverse automotive applications.
