Climate change and malaria incidence in Africa: A case of Uganda

Malaria is rampant in Africa causing untold mortality and morbidity.It is one the leading causes of deaths with pregnant mothers and children under five years of age at most risk. With the sub Saharan Africa(SSA) being one of the most vulnerable regions globally to climate change, and malaria being very sensitive to spatial and temporal climate and/ weather variability, there is a considerable concern over the implications of climate change on the future disease risk. Secondly,the problem of malaria vectors (Anopheles mosquitoes) shifting from their traditional low land locations to invade new highland zones has also caused more deaths in SSA than before. Therefore, the research presented in this book focuses on the results of the established spatial and temporal relationships between climate and/weather parameters and malaria incidence as well as the developed climate induced malaria incidence models in SSA using Uganda as a case study. In addition,results of climate change based malaria incidence projections at both spatial and temporal scales is presented mainly for aiding in the designing of informed and appropriated anticipatory adaptation mechanisms.

Mohammed Ssemwanga is Ugandan from Kampala city. He holds an Honors degree in Horticultural Science from Makerere University, Uganda. He also holds a Master of Science in Climate and Society (majored in Applied Climate Sciences), from Mekelle University, Ethiopia.
