Toxoplasmosis is a protozoan infection that has a cosmopolitan distribution and has also been documented as the commonest opportunistic infection affecting the central nervous system among patients with HIV/AIDS in developed countries, especially among those not taking appropriate prophylactic treatment. Although the human infection is usually asymptomatic or mild, the disease entity is life-threatening among immune-compromised patients, who frequently develop cerebral toxoplasmosis along with other associated opportunistic infections that are typically seen among HIV/AIDS patients.
