Tropical degraded natural forests are of large areas on China's Hainan Island and these forests are characterized as low ecological and economical values. The restoration of the degraded natural forests is a hot topic and urgent issue. Close-to-nature forests are expected to meet the ecological requirements and the economical needs of the society with the least investment. This book which is based on a research study conducted on Hainan Island give an insight on how to conduct forest inventory to provide the information for restoration, how to analyze and compare the forests in terms of forest horizontal structure, vertical structure, and species structure and finally based on aforementioned analysis how to design the forest development types for restoration purpose with close-to-nature concept. This book will be especially useful to foresters, ecologists and administrators especially in the forest and environment sectors.

Jinghui Meng, M.Sc.: B. Forest Science; M.Sc. Close-to-Nature forest management from Chinese Academy of Forestry; M.Sc. Tropical and International Forestry from Göttingen University, Germany. His main interests are forest ecology, restoration ecology and forest resource monitoring. He is currently a Ph.D student in Chinese Academy of Forestry.
