Coherence strengthens: How interventions defeat stress
Details
Stressors are omnipresent in life and cannot be completely avoided, which raises the question of how to deal with them effectively and what potential people have to cope with them. The model of salutogenesis is a departure from the previously accepted pathogenetic approach to the development of disease and asks what keeps people healthy or allows them to recover despite the stresses of everyday life and daily stressors in their environment. This paper therefore refers to Aaron Antonovsky's (1993) concept of sense of coherence, which is understood as a disposition to experience life as meaningful and manageable, with research findings indicating that SOC has a protective effect on mental health in stressful situations. This raises the research question of whether interventions to promote a sense of coherence have an effect on stress symptoms, which is investigated quantitatively in this paper using, among other things, a pairwise meta-analysis.
